Medical Office Assistant

The Medical Office Assistant (MOA) certificate program is designed to prepare graduates for employment as medical office assistants in a variety of healthcare environments.

Program Hours: The Medical Office Assistant Program runs Monday to Thursday from 8:00 am to 3:00, except during the practicum when students work Monday through Friday for the hours assigned by the practicum host.

The first step, apply early. Students who have officially applied and met all admission requirements are sent a letter of acceptance approximately four to five months in advance of the next available start date. A first payment is required to reserve a space in the program.

Students acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to practice as a medical office assistant and perform a variety of duties associated with managing a medical office or clinic within various healthcare environments.

Upon completion of the Medical Office Assistant certificate program, graduates will be able to:

  • Communicate professionally with clients and members of the medical and health professional team.
  • Work safely in a healthcare environment.
  • Practice in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Use problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making and information literacy skills in practice.
  • Practice effective quality management in healthcare environments.
  • Manage patient records and perform medical billing procedures.
  • Assist physicians by performing clinical procedures within MOA scope of practice.
  • Collaborate with the medical team to implement and apply “Chronic Disease Management” protocols.
  • Use medical and business computer applications related to word processing, data management, and electronic communication.
  • Accurately transcribe medical correspondence and reports utilizing keyboarding skills at a speed level required by current employment standards.

Instructional Activities, Design and Delivery Mode

The program is divided into two terms of integrated training. The theory component is delivered through lectures, seminars, group work, demonstrations and student presentations. Students apply the theory component through case simulations, exercises, role practice, computer lab work and practicum experiences.

Evaluation of Student Learning

Student learning is assessed through written exams, quizzes, group work, assignments and completion of a journal. Practicum performance is assessed by feedback from practicum staff and instructor observations.

Adult learners have a responsibility to prepare themselves to meet the program goals. To achieve the highest level of success, students are required to attend all classes and participate in all course activities.

Students with more than three unexcused absences in any course may be required to withdraw. For more details refer to the Student Manual available in the Office, Legal and Medical Administration Department and VCC policy D.4.6.

Students must pass the first level of each course in order to advance to the next level. Students must also pass all Term 1 courses in order to proceed to Term 2. In addition, students must pass each Term 2 course (apart from the Practicum course) in order to take the Practicum course.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 16 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Program Specific

Missing prerequisites? VCC offers courses in Adult Upgrading and English as an Additional Language to help you meet your goals.
  • Grade 12 graduation, or equivalent
  • English 12 with a C+ or equivalent, or English language proficiency 
  • A tested keyboarding speed of a minimum of 25 gross words per minute on a 5-minute test with a maximum of 5 errors using the touch-typing method (using the appropriate fingers for each key on the keyboard and not looking at your fingers as you type).

Some practicum hosts will require their practicum students to have the following (and it is strongly recommended that all students have the following, for their own protection and the protection of patients):

  • Negative TB skin test, or if the skin test is positive, then proof of a negative TB chest X-ray
  • An immunization record showing current vaccinations for diphtheria/tetanus, polio, measles/mumps/rubella, hepatitis B, chicken pox, and pertussis
  • An immunization record showing a current influenza vaccination
  • A properly fitted respiratory mask with a N95 rating, with a valid certificate not more than one year ol
  • Criminal record check

Gain the skills you need to begin a successful career as a medical office assistant.

During our intensive six-month program, experienced instructors use the most current software and equipment to prepare you for the workplace. You’ll learn medical administrative procedures, medical terminology, keyboarding, human relation skills, e-communications management, medical documentation, medical transcription, medical billing and clinical procedures. There is also a three-week practicum to get you started in your new career. Our graduates are working throughout Vancouver and across B.C. in doctors' offices, medical clinics and hospitals.

Join us for an information session at VCC’s Downtown campus, 250 West Pender Street, just steps from the Stadium-Chinatown SkyTrain station. The first half hour is dedicated to a program presenation and Q&A session, then a free keyboarding assessment is available.
