Deaf and Hard of Hearing – Speechreading Courses


Students taking DHH Speechreading have the option of taking the evening, afternoon or morning classes (2.5 hours per week), depending on demand.  Speechreading classes are scheduled to begin in September, January, and April.  Family and friends are also encouraged to enroll with the students who have hearing loss.  Students who successfully complete Speechreading Level 1 may choose to enrol in Speechreading Level 2.

Students will learn:

  • Advantages and limitations of speechreading
  • How to combine what you see with what you hear
  • How to identify factors that affect your ability to communicate
  • How to use a variety of strategies to communicate more effectively
  • How to behave assertively in difficult situations
  • Tips for stress reduction and relaxation

General

This program welcomes applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Program options for international students can be found at VCC International.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 16 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Please note that you must submit official transcripts and educational documents to support your application; unfortunately, we cannot accept photocopies or fax versions.


Program Specific

Missing prerequisites? VCC offers courses in Adult Upgrading and English as an Additional Language to help you meet your goals.

Applicants must have an interview with the Speechreading instructor prior to applying. Applicants should apply well in advance of the start dates.

  • Student must be hard of hearing
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Student must have good spoken and written English
  • Department interview required
