Makeup Artistry Certificate

The Makeup Artistry Certificate is designed for individuals planning to enter the makeup, film, photography, theatre, fashion, and bridal industries. Taught by industry experts, the program emphasizes the development of technical and professional skills with the goal of fostering individual growth and creativity.

Students who complete this program will develop the skills, confidence, and experience required to provide makeup artistry services and conduct business in all areas of the field.

Prospective students will need to register at least 2 weeks prior to the course start date, to ensure that their kit is received for the first day of class.

Program Description


After completing the program, the student will have developed the ability to:

    1. Select compatible products for all skin types and needs.
    2. Use basic tools (including the airbrush) to apply various makeup styles based on client needs.
    3. Identify the characteristics of makeup styles of various historical periods.
    4. Implement the correct techniques for contouring various face shapes to improve balance and proportion.
    5. Use the colour wheel to select a colour palette that complements the subject.
    6. Conduct makeup consultations and draw face charts detailing makeup selection, colours, and product placement for a variety looks.
    7. Apply eye makeup styles appropriate to each client’s eye shape.
    8. Create makeup design for specialty areas such as fashion shows, theatrical characters, and special effects.
    9. Produce and maintain a resume and photo portfolio of makeup artistry skills for the cosmetic and makeup artist industries.
    10. Identify and implement appropriate and successful sales strategies for cosmetic services and products.
    11. Understand the various roles and responsibilities in the cosmetic and makeup artist industries.


Program participants should expect a mix of activities including:

  • Lectures/in-class theory
  • Group activities
  • Applying makeup on classmates
  • Individual and group projects
  • In-class quizzes and tests


Part-time for a year and a half to two years


Evaluation of the course is determined by the instructor and may include a combination of practical assignments, projects, and theory and/or practical exams. Students must achieve an overall passing grade of 70%.

  • Attendance 10%


Upon successful completion of this program, and once an application for graduation has been submitted to the registrar’s office, the student will receive a Vancouver Community College Makeup Artistry Certificate.

A minimum of one elective course is required. Students have the option of completing all three.

Please note, students who have taken the four core courses previously and wish to receive a certificate are required to complete one or all of the elective courses.

(MKUP 1103) Fashion and Photography Makeup 1 credits    $678.14  course outline

Exploration of advanced makeup application techniques and design concepts for runway fashion shows, photo shoots, and special events. Students learn the difference between makeup for hi-definition and traditional film shoots and are taught to re-create looks from the various decades, and create makeup styles that are unusual, over the top, and print worthy.
