Vancouver Community College's TESOL Diploma program is a comprehensive program of studies for teaching English to speakers of other languages, in Canada or abroad, consisting of 9 core courses and a supervised teaching internship. This program is recognized for professional certification (Level 2) by TESL Canada.

Program Description

The TESOL Diploma Program is 10 months in duration, starting once per year in September (no classes in July or August) and consists of 10 core courses. This program is designed to involve the student in a variety of learning environments and instructional delivery methods. Throughout the program, students participate in lectures, demonstrations, peer teaching, group teaching and activities, and individual practice teaching. There may be guest instructors, instructional videos and an opportunity to use computer and audio labs. There is a supervised practicum.

Prior to enrolling in Term 3 (TESO 1266 Teaching Academic English and TESO 1270 Internship) students must have completed all other courses.

English requirements for this program indicate the need for demonstrated proficiency in the English language with excellent oral and written communication skills.

To receive the TESOL diploma, students must complete all of the required courses.

Classes are generally held in the evenings from 6:30 - 9 p.m. (subject to change).

This program is recognized for professional certification (level 2) by TESL Canada.

Students who have completed all of the courses in this program must apply to receive their credential. Please complete the application for TESOL credential form and submit it to the Registrar's Office.

This program welcomes applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Program options for international students can be found at VCC International.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 16 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Please note that you must submit official transcripts and educational documents to support your application; unfortunately, we cannot accept photocopies or fax versions.

Program Specific

Missing prerequisites? VCC offers courses in Adult Upgrading and English as an Additional Language to help you meet your goals.
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent
  • 1st Year University English with a minimum 'C+' or equivalent
  • Applicants whose first language is other than English, who are presenting foreign documents, must achieve the following scores on one of the following English language proficiency tests:
  • A minimum score of 88 on the internet based TOEFL with no score lower than 22, or
  • A Band 6.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS – academic stream) with no band score less than 6.0 with a minimum score of 6.5 on the speaking and listening band, or
  • A minimum score of 145/200 on the VCC English Language Assessment Test with minimum scores as follows: Listening: 27/30; Speaking: 27/30; Essay: 17/20; Reading: 50/70. The ELA score must be free of a pronunciation recommendation.
Note: Applicants who present a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution without an English course may be considered for admission by approval from the Department/Program area.
