Transfer Credit

Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate

First Year Credit & Advanced Standing for AP/IB Course Work

Students who complete college-level courses while in high school may receive advanced standing towards their program at VCC. Students who successfully complete Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) course work are eligible to register in fewer courses to fulfill their VCC program requirements.

In combination with approved Prior Learning Assessment Recognotion (PLAR) credits, the maximum credits obtained through transfer will not exceed 65% of the total credit value of the student's program of study at VCC. Some programs may have different restrictions for maximum credits obtained through transfer credit and PLAR. Please refer to the Program Content Guide of your program for more details.

International students are strongly advised to consult with the International Education (IE) office to learn how transfer credit for AP and/or IB course work may impact their study permit and/or post-graduate work permit eligibility.

Receiving transfer credit(s) may reduce the number of courses required in a term, full-time program status and/or overall length of study. This may impact eligibility for financial assistance, scholarships, bursaries, and awards. Students are strongly advised to consult with the Financial Aid Office to learn how transfer credit may impact their status and eligibility.

Students must submit all requests for transfer credit a minimum two weeks prior to the start of registration. Transfer credit will not be assessed or awarded once course freeze dates have passed.

Advanced Placement (AP) program

College-level transfer credit may be granted to students who complete certain Advanced Placement program (AP) examinations.

Normally, a minimum grade of 4 is required for transfer for AP courses. Transferability of Advanced Placement courses is listed in the B.C. Transfer Guide - Advanced Placement section.

To obtain credit for AP courses at VCC, students must provide the following documentation:

  • If taken at a B.C. secondary school, the final grades will be reported on your final high school transcript. This is sufficient for meeting high school entrance requirements.
  • If taken at an international secondary school (including the U.S.A.) and/or an international secondary school delivering the B.C./Yukon secondary school curriculum, the final grades will be reported on your final high school transcript. This is sufficient for meeting high school entrance requirements.
  • Transfer credit will only be evaluated and granted when official AP score results are sent directly from the AP College Board to the Registrar’s Office at any VCC campus location. Students may be able to request that the results be sent directly to VCC when the test is written, or transcripts can be ordered later.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Program

College-level transfer credit may be granted to students who complete certain higher level (HL) International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations. Normally, a minimum grade of 5 is required for transfer of IB courses. Transferability of International Baccalaureate courses is listed in the B.C. Transfer Guide - International Baccalaureate section.

To obtain credit for IB courses at VCC, students must provide the following documentation:

  • If taken at a B.C. secondary school, the final grades will be reported on your final high school transcript. This is sufficient for meeting high school entrance requirements.
  • If taken at an international secondary school (including the U.S.A.) and/or an international secondary school delivering the B.C./Yukon secondary school curriculum, the final grades will be reported on your final high school transcript. This is sufficient for meeting high school entrance requirements.
  • Transfer credit will only be evaluated and granted when official IB score results are sent directly from the International Baccalaureate organization to the Registrar's Office at any VCC campus location. Students may be able to request that the results be sent directly to VCC when the test is written, or transcripts can be ordered later.
