Celebrating Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas at VCC
Dear VCC community,
As many members of our VCC community prepare to celebrate Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas, I want to extend my warmest wishes to everyone observing these important occasions.
Diwali, often referred to as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by Hindu, Jain, Sikh and other communities around the world, each with their own traditions and significance. For many, it represents the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and hope over despair. It is also a time for family, reflection, generosity and new beginnings.
Having celebrated Diwali with my family throughout my life, I know how meaningful this occasion can be. It is a time to reconnect with loved ones, share traditions across generations and reflect on the values that bring us together.
Bandi Chhor Divas is an important celebration in the Sikh faith, commemorating the release of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji from imprisonment, along with 52 other princes. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of freedom, compassion, justice and standing up for others. The occasion is marked through prayer, music, food and langar, and acts of generosity and service.
While these celebrations have their own distinct histories and traditions, both offer an opportunity to reflect on the importance of community, kindness and bringing light into the lives of others.
One of the things I value most about VCC is the diversity of our students, employees and the communities we serve. We have so much to learn from one another, and celebrations like these remind us of the importance of creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
To everyone celebrating, I wish you and your families a joyful and meaningful Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas.
I encourage everyone to take part in the festivities, whether you celebrate Diwali or Bandi Chhor Divas yourself or are joining in to learn more and share in the spirit of the occasions.
November 5, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Downtown Campus. Join us for a joyful celebration featuring delicious snacks, refreshing drinks, and vibrant community spirit. Everyone is welcome.
I wish you a Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak, and a joyful Bandi Chhor Divas.
With gratitude,
