Vancouver Community College has secured funding to help reduce the cost of training for 20 students taking VCC’s Sustainable Buildings course.

Funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program, the course starts Wednesday, Jan. 21 and is offered online from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. for 10 weeks. With the discount, the cost for tuition is less than $90, including fees.

The course examines the ways in which buildings can be made more energy efficient and greener through recommissioning, retrofitting, renewing, and other technologies and initiatives. Basic energy calculations and terminology will be introduced along with potential strategies for energy use reduction. An awareness of regulations, local policies and sustainability standards will be emphasized with a view to future planning and retrofitting.

The course is part of VCC’s Building Manager program. In this certificate program, students learn the foundational skills in building maintenance and cleaning, contracts, budgeting, building operations and technology, sustainability, risk management, as well as the communication and conflict resolution skills required of a building manager.

Students can register now, for a January 21 start.
