Wishing the VCC community a fantastic winter break
Dear VCC community,
I’d like to begin by acknowledging that VCC is situated on the traditional and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn and work on these lands, and to belong to a college community that upholds the values of respect, reconciliation, and meaningful connection.
As we near the winter break, I’d like to take the opportunity to express my appreciation for the VCC community. 2025 has been a challenging but also extraordinary year in many ways, thanks to the contributions of every member of VCC. Students, faculty, and staff, thank you for your creativity, dedication, and resilience. We’ve faced changes in our sector this year, with new federal policies impacting post-secondary institutions nationwide. I’m proud of how our community has responded amidst uncertainty, and I look forward to another year of steadfast commitment to our students.
We’ve shared many highlights this year, including celebrating 50 years of VCC’s Asian Culinary Arts program. Alumni, instructors, and students gathered to celebrate our shared history and invest in the next generation of culinary leaders. In June, our dental students once again rolled out the Tooth Trolley, transforming our downtown clinic into a hub of community care. Hundreds of local children received free preventative treatments, gaining both healthy smiles and confidence. This year also saw incredible global collaborations - from our joint initiatives with ALMA, the International School of Italian Cuisine, to the French Consulate’s study-abroad program. These efforts remind us that learning and care extend far beyond borders. In September, our automotive team wowed audiences by converting a gas-powered pickup truck into an electric vehicle - live on the convention show floor at Everything Electric. This project embodied what VCC does best: blending technical excellence with innovation and environmental responsibility.
We’ve also seen important leadership transitions on VCC’s Board of Governors. Our new Board Chair, Mahin Rashid, and Vice Chair, Jeffrey Yu bring years of experience, vision, and energy to their roles. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to outgoing board members Joey Hartman and Libby Davies for their thoughtful and dedicated leadership.
As the holidays approach, I hope you find time to recharge and enjoy the company of those who matter most. This time of year, always reminds me of the deep connection and genuine care that defines our college community.
Wishing you a peaceful, joyful end to 2025. Together, we’ll keep learning, adapting, and making an impact in 2026.
With gratitude,
Ajay Patel
