VCC sends four to Skills Canada competitions

Vancouver Community College (VCC) students secured a total of 19 medals across baking, culinary arts, auto repair, hairstyling, aesthetics, and graphic design at the Skills BC provincial competitions on Wednesday, April 19 held this year at the Trade Exhibition (Tradex) centre in Abbotsford.

Over 600 competitors filled the hall early morning as spectators watched, toured booths, and engaged in Try-A-Trade activities through the day. In the exhibition room, VCC Baking and Pastry Arts drew the attention of young crowds with cotton candy while quizzing them on their baking knowledge. VCC Esthetics had a long line of clients interested in nail painting while others tried their hand at VR car painting.

Well done Team VCC!

VCC Baking swept the podium with Kaitlyn Chan winning gold, while Gian Ruth Caron and Ethan Jireh Dunol placed second and third respectively. William Wu from VCC Culinary Arts ranked third in his category.

Seasoned competitor Tyler Shine claimed gold in Automotive Repair, while Danielle Harper and Heidi Durkop claimed silver and bronze in the Car Painting category.

On the esthetics front, Boa Ngoc Vu and Elvyra Wallace finished second and third respectively. VCC Hairstyling student Holly Severy took home silver while Georgia Ball sat in third place.

First-place finishers will be en route to Winnipeg, Manitoba for national Skills Canada competitions between May 24-27 at the RBC Convention Centre.
