“Art Installation to commemorate and honour the children who perished at residential schools across Canada (Turtle Island).  The permanent installation will feature columns of books arranged in a circle. The spines of the books that form each pillar will provide a flat surface on which a photograph of an Indigenous child who attended one of the many horrific Residential Schools will be applied.  Testimonies of the survivors and their descriptions of their painful experiences will be written on the outer surface of the pairs of shoes, with each pair positioned on the top of the book column.  The shoes will be tied with chains in place of laces, representing the bondage subjected upon each child who was forced to attend these schools”. - Tamara Bell

Every year on September 30, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

The creation of this federal statutory holiday was through legislative amendments made by Parliament. On June 3, 2021, Bill C-5, An Act to amend the Bills of Exchange Act, the Interpretation Act and the Canada Labour Code (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation) received Royal Assent.

On March 9, 2023, British Columbia passed legislation to make September 30 a statutory holiday in the province. This will be done through creating a new Act (The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Act) and amendments to the Employment Standards Act.

All VCC employees and students are encouraged to learn more about the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation via the provincial and federal websites.

VCC will be closed on October 2, 2023 in lieu of this day.

When: Thursday, May 4, 2023
Time: 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
Where: VCC Downtown Atrium and VCC Broadway, Building B, Event Space

All are welcome to attend and join in the festivities. Eid Mubarak!

What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr ("Festival of Breaking the Fast") is a three-day Islamic festival celebrating the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting.

During Ramadan or the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims devote themselves to prayer, self-restraint, charity, and fasting from sunrise to sundown. This act is known as Sawm and is one of the five pillars of the Islamic faith.

When is Eid al-Fitr celebrated?

Eid al-Fitr takes place in the first three days of Shawwāl, or the 10th month in the Islamic lunar calendar, and dates may vary yearly. Considered a national holiday in Muslim countries, Eid al-Fitr is one of two major religious holidays. Eid al-Fitr, follows Ramadan and marks the breaking of the fast whereas Eid Al Adha, follows the Hajj pilgrimage and is considered as the festival of sacrifice.

Eid al-Fitr is typically celebrated by participating in special morning prayers, gift-giving, visits with family and friends, charity, and special meals, especially sweets. To greet someone during this time, you may say, "Eid Mubarak!" and wish them a blessed festival/feast.

Did you know: As one of the most celebrated festivals around the world, Eid al-Fitr goes by several names, including ʿĪd al-Fiṭr, Küçük Bayram, Koriteh, Ramazan Bayramı and al-ʿĪd al-Ṣaghīr.

Join this online zoom webinar to learn how to design for today's post-secondary landscape

In recent years, we have seen incredible change in post-secondary education that impacts how we design and deliver our courses and programs.

There is a greater emphasis on the student learning experience; utilization of technology; blended and online learning;  social justice; and diverse ways of knowing and being.

In this symposium, we will explore instructional and research practices that look at how we can best design and deliver programming that enriches the student experience and meets the current and future needs of teaching and learning in post-secondary education.

This free event will take place on both Thursday, March 30 and Friday, March 31 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Register online at https://TLRsymposium2023.eventbrite.ca

Creative exhibition share migrant womens' experiences with Belonging and Exclusion in Canada

With the recent government announcement of almost 1.5 million newcomers to Canada expected by 2025, how can we welcome them? Join us at an exhibition that explores the feelings of Belonging and Exclusion.

The opening will be held in the VCC Broadway Event Space on Tuesday, November 15 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Please join us for refreshments and reflection.

Following the opening, the exhibition will remain in place until Friday, November 25.

This creative exhibition is the result of a Photovoice research project which asked approximately 40 migrant (forced and chosen) women about their experiences of Belonging and Exclusion in Canada. The exhibition of 50 photographs and quotes is a powerful learning experience that builds empathy among its audience. The voices of women who are not typically represented in the mainstream media are brought forward.

This Photovoice project was led by two faculty from the University of the Fraser Valley, and one faculty from Vancouver Community College. The exhibition is sponsored by the LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) Department with funding from the VCC Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

After going strong for three years, Jazz Repertory Ensemble is an exciting student ensemble at VCC music. The group focuses on standard jazz repertoire written by major jazz composers, and consists of songs that are often recorded, but not usually played live. Considered a "learning ensemble," the repertoire includes jazz influenced by swing, bebop, latin, afro cuban, and funk.

Gamelan ensemble:

Gongs, gongs and more gongs (and some other cool instruments) - that's the essence of a gamelan. It's an enchanting sound world brought to life with music by the students of the VCC gamelan ensemble.

11:10 a.m. Welcome

11:15 a.m. VCC's Mental Health and Well-being Strategic Initiative launch Ajay Patel, President and CEO, VCC

After extensive consultation from employees and students, Vancouver Community College (VCC) is launching a Mental Health and Well-being Framework.

Created in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association British Columbia Division (CMHA BC) and Healthy Minds | Healthy Campuses, as well as guided by VCC’s Mental Health and Well-being Steering Committee, the framework garnered over 1,500 responses from members of the college community by way of focus groups, dialogues, and a campus-wide survey. The framework aims to guide the college’s well-being efforts in promoting mental health for the next five years (2022-2026).

11:20 a.m. Live music Theda Phoenix, VCC Alumna
11:30 a.m. Keynote: Tools for taking care of our mental health and well-being Sarah Peyton, Certified Trainer of Nonviolent Communication and Neuroscience Educator What does research show us is the best way to take care of ourselves? What do isolation and loneliness do to us, and how can we counteract them? Join Sarah Peyton for fun, surprising information on our brains and what they need.
12:30 p.m. Chair yoga Sandra Jara (sponsored by SUVCC) Practicing yoga regularly provides countless benefits, both physical and mental. The class is for all levels, whether you have practiced before or if it is your first time doing yoga. I encourage my students to practice Yoga with the sound of their own breathing and listening to their bodies, how it opens, contracts, releases and how suddenly with an adjustment they can enter the yoga posture and the experience is transformed. Also, I encourage them to feel the body, aligning it, inviting gently to go a little farther, support it, and explore the yoga posture (Asana) to see what is beyond.
1 p.m. Procrastination workshop: Why we avoid doing what we know will be good for us Mika Maniwa, Certified Trainer of Nonviolent Communication

Do you procrastinate – do you avoid doing what you know you “should” do? Do you judge yourself as being “lazy”? Do you feel frustrated when you can’t concentrate on the task in front of you? Is it hard to feel compassion for the part of you that may be frozen in terror, alone with the overwhelm?

We will learn about the power of empathy and kindness to change our brains. We hope to better understand our behaviours that don’t always make sense.

1:30 p.m. Sound healing Theda Phoenix, VCC Alumna In this session, participants will be invited to recline comfortably, close their eyes and receive the calming effects of guided sound healing music to support nervous system regulation. We will enter a state of slowing down, connecting to the breath, body and our intentions as the sounds and frequencies of Crystal Singing Bowls and the natural human voice creates a calming and balancing effect on the nervous system, intended to lead to an experience of well being, renewal, relaxation, and peace.
2 p.m. Closing Alper Caglayan, VCC Counsellor

The 14th annual Fair in the Square will bring together people from various parts of the city to connect with our inner city neighbours and with the non-profit agencies that are doing amazing work in the community, as well as to enjoy some great live music and entertainment, arts and crafts, an artisan market and free BBQ, cupcakes, watermelon and coffee. Each year, more than 3,000 people join us in Victory Square Park to connect, celebrate and build hope. For a taste of Fair in the Square, please watch the short video recap below of 2019’s event.

VCC campuses will have orange shirt cut-outs on display with the numbers from each of the recently recovered Indian Residential School burial sites.

Blank orange shirt cut outs will also be available for folks to write and post a personal pledge for what they are going to do to address Indigenous racism, reconciliation and/or decolonization. All pledges will be on display at VCC’s Downtown, Broadway, and Annacis Island campuses from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Visitors can also enter to win prizes! An orange shirt and the book 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act.

VCC closed

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to again be held Friday, September 30, 2022

Vancouver Community College (VCC) will once again honour and acknowledge the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, 2022. All campuses will be closed on that day.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities.

The provincial government of B.C. has advised all provincial public sector employers to plan for September 30, 2022, to again be observed as a day to celebrate the diverse cultures, resilience and contributions of Indigenous Peoples as well as to commemorate the history and legacy of the residential school system.

For those in the VCC community planning for the fall, we hope this information will help inform your calendars. At this time, it is unknown what day, or how, the National day for Truth and Reconciliation will be held in 2023. Any updated info will be shared.

All VCC employees are encouraged to learn more about the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation via the provincial and federal websites.

A virtual gala

News-Herstory-in-Focus-800

VCC Fashion is pleased to once again be supporting the Herstory in Focus fundraiser of the Downtown Eastside Women's Center. The team will be acting as consultants for the fashion show segment, and will be on-site for workshops and the show. VCC Fashion will also be making masks for the women involved.

VIRTUAL GALA: Includes comedy, a fashion show, musical performances, a silent auction, and much more!

HOST: Savannah Erasmus, “a “Vintage” comedian based in Vancouver, BC. She was raised in Kikino Metis Settlement and Cold Lake First Nation, in Treaty 6 Territory (Northern Alberta). Her Indigenous perspective and “fashion-focused” lens create a fresh and unique stand-up persona that audiences adore. “

SPECIAL GUESTS: Laydy Jams & Maia

FUNDRAISING GOAL: The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre is recording a 50% increase in the number of women accessing services since provincial health and safety restrictions were relaxed on July 1, 2021. Oftentimes, a hot, nutritious meal is a gateway for the community’s most vulnerable women to a continuum of holistic supports to improve her situation. DEWC’s meals program is still mostly funded by individual donations, and their goal is to fundraise over $120,000 to support DEWC’s expanding meals program.

Purchase tickets to the virtual event, and bid on silent auction items here.

What you need to know for VCC's annual earthquake drill

VCC will participate in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 10:15 a.m.

  • During the drill, audio announcements will be broadcast instructing anyone on campus to "drop, cover, and hold on."
  • Upon completion of the earthquake drill, building alarms will be activated and VCC will practice a full campus evacuation (with physical distancing due to COVID-19).

Earthquake preparedness at home

More than 3,000 earthquakes occur in British Columbia each year. Most are too small to be felt, but the risk of one big enough to cause significant damage is very real. Participating in the Great ShakeOut is an effective way to better understand B.C.’s earthquake risk and how to prepare.

Drop, cover, and hold on! Learn more about what you should do during an earthquake.

Model Organisms is the talk of the city as Vancouver Community College (VCC) and BC Children’s Hospital present their creative new collection at Vancouver Kids Fashion Week (VKFW) for the SS20 season. Model Organisms is the result of a collaboration between students, alumni, and instructors in VCC's fashion design and production program as well as research scientists in the Healthy Starts theme at BC Children’s Hospital.

This "Fashion Meets Science" team is passionate about showcasing species such as fruit flies and yeast (called "model organisms") that help us learn about genetics and child development.

Honouring families and communities impacted by the residential school system

On September 30, VCC will observe Orange Shirt Day. We encourage everyone to wear an orange shirt in the spirit of reconciliation and to show their support of families and communities impacted by the residential school system.

Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, B.C., in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.

The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.

Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools, and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

2019 Chefs Table Sam Fabbro

Join us on August 14 for a one-night-only special guest chef edition of VCC's popular Chef's Table featuring Executive Chef Sam Fabbro.

The Chef’s Table Guest Chef Series was initiated in November 2017 to showcase VCC alumni, our culinary arts and hospitality programs, and to raise funds for future equipment needs and student bursaries and scholarships.

As a child, Chef Sam Fabbro began cooking with his grandmother, deciding early on that culinary arts would be his life's path. While attending LA Matheson Secondary School, Sam dedicated a year to culinary training under the instruction of Chef O while also working at Cobre Restaurant.

After attending VCC, Sam went on to work at Restaurant 62, Raincity Grill, CinCin, and Cocktails & Canapés. Rising from Sous Chef to Executive Chef at the award-winning El Santo, Sam recently opened the New Westminster plant-based eatery, Amaranthus, with El Santo owner, Alejandro Diaz.

You'll enjoy a five-course, fixed menu with optional wine pairings. Seating is limited. Purchase tickets early to avoid dissapointment!
