Founded in 1991, University Mobility in the Asia and Pacific (UMAP) is a voluntary association of government and non-government representatives of the higher education sector. The general aim of UMAP is for the countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region to achieve a better understanding of the cultural, economic, and social systems of one another through enhanced cooperation among higher education institutions and increased mobility of university students and staff.
With over 500 member institutions in 20 countries and territories, UMAP offers a range of programs that support student mobility and academic collaboration across the Asia-Pacific region, including the UMAP Student Connection Online (USCO) for virtual exchanges and in-person mobility programs that enable students to study at partner institutions abroad. The association also offers scholarship opportunities that support both inbound and outbound exchange and professional development, collaborative research and international networking opportunities for faculty and staff.
Vancouver Community College (VCC), representing member country Canada, served as the UMAP IS from 2021 to 2025. This role was generously supported by Global Affairs Canada, and over the five-year period, VCC administered more than $1 million CAD in scholarships to students across the UMAP consortium, enabling participants to study in Canada or for Canadian students to pursue studies abroad through academic year, semester-long, short-term, and virtual programs.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is serving as the UMAP IS for the 2026–2030 term.
As a legacy of its leadership and in order to sustain the strength of the UMAP Canada membership in the consortium, VCC applied to serve as the managing institution for a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship program on behalf of UMAP Canada members.
